Find a workout class to build muscle and motivation

Want to improve your fitness this year? Doing it on your own can be difficult, but a class can teach you something new while keeping you accountable and expanding your social circle. The Upstate is full of opportunities to try a new activity—the right one for you will feel like a gift, not a punishment. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Spenga

You may have seen the gym on Pelham Road with the odd name, a portmanteau of “spin,” “strength,” and “yoga.” Each 60-minute class offers 20 minutes of spin for a cardio burst, 20 minutes of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) to build muscle, and 20 minutes of yoga for flexibility and recovery. Strength-only and cycling-only classes are also available.

Exercise Coach

This spot in Simpsonville offers Exerbotics Machines, technology that measures your muscular and metabolic makeup and prescribes a customized workout just for you. But don’t let the high-tech machines fool you—these workouts are designed for people who are fitness enthusiasts as well as those just starting out.

The Junkyard

With the tagline Run.Ride.Row.Rage, you can expect physical and mental benefits when you take this class that includes treadmill work, cycling, rowing, and strength training in intervals that build muscle and boost metabolism. They have three locations in Greenville, Mauldin/Simpsonville, and Anderson.

The Booty Shop

Find female-focused fitness at this downtown spot, which offers five classes that suit every fitness level. If finding community is high on your priority list, their Mimosa Bar is a great spot to linger and make lasting connections; it offers complimentary mimosas and iced coffee after every class.

Shred415

This gym near Furman blends treadmill drills, strength training, and cardio bursts with a coach offering modifications to suit any fitness level. Most classes feature four 15-minute intervals, or you can choose the express option for a full workout in 45 minutes. Need childcare? Sign your kids up for the Kids’ Lounge during your class.
