Anticipation is one of life’s greatest unsung pleasures. The moment you’re handed a crisp glass of wine on a hot summer’s day, a longed-for cup of coffee, or a cocktail that sounds like a 90s album cover, time stops just for a moment. The endless scratch-track of thoughts pauses. You breathe in something aromatic, effervescent, warming. Your shoulders let go of your ears and relax down your back. And usually—this is arguably the best part—you’re in good company. Like cracking open a new book or glossy magazine, we both know we’re holding something to look forward to and savor.
So, salut! Santé! Sure, pour another! Let this be your month of cheers and clinked glasses, where permission is freely given to celebrate everything (and despite anything). Make plans or non-plans, with yourself or with your favorite humans. Find reasons to find community, taste something spirited, or give that new venture the green light. August is all about bounty, and we’re glass-half-full types here at TOWN Magazine.
Many of the stories in our Drink issue reward anticipation in all the right ways, whether you’re looking for discovery, departure, or fascinating details. We dive into road trip-worthy destination breweries, reveal the rich history of Yadkin Valley (don’t miss our winery-hopping guide!), and peek inside a local urban winery. We raise a glass to good causes with Dr. Ryan Gossage of Medicinal Whiskey and Dr. Mary Ann Childs of Wi’er, a new beverage company producing a curious elixir. Plus, we bring you up close and personal with three folks you’re sure to want at your next cocktail party.
Ironically, as I write this, I’m on a sabbatical from the harder stuff—we’re expecting an August baby. Like the great bottle of Marked Tree Vineyard Vidal Blanc waiting patiently in my fridge, it’s yet another good thing to look forward to this summer. So grab a glass and turn the page: it’s hot out, and the bartender is feeling generous.
