Wellness is a nebulous term. For some, it means heavy weights and protein shakes; for others, it’s meditation and juice fasts; still others say it’s a good book and glass of wine by the fire. And the truth is, they are all right. Through decades of trial and error—reading, interviewing experts, and trying every fitness endeavor all the way back to step aerobics and Jane Fonda workouts—I’ve learned one key lesson: wellness comes in all shapes and sizes. It’s as individual as we are.

I heard a quote years ago, a simple concept that has resonated with me ever since: our bodies are instruments, not ornaments. I’d love to credit this to a scholar or philosopher, but the truth is, I heard Alanis Morissette say it on Oprah. The idea is that true wellness comes not from a quest to look a certain way or fit into any external standards, but from doing the activities that bring us joy. For the people who stay consistent in health and fitness routines, and get the most out of them, their wellness endeavors aren’t punishments; they are gifts.

While pushing yourself can have its own rewards, this issue is full of peaceful ways to boost wellness in this new year. Find your center at a luxe Greenville spa, take a leisurely spin on a new section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, or head out of town for a weekend full of rest and relaxation in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

Whether you want an intense, sweaty workout or a quiet moment to unwind, yoga can be the perfect addition to your routine, and options abound in the Upstate. Our two experts can get you started. Or try boosting your environment through feng shui or the addition of a vibrant green plant (or several). Stocking your pantry with nourishing basics can help you whip up healthy meals with minimal work.

No matter what wellness efforts you take on this year, we encourage you to ask yourself one question: Is this making my life better? You’ll know you’ve found the right activity when you don’t feel like you have to do it; you get to do it.

Here’s to every stride toward a healthy, happy 2024.

After several years editing publications at Community Journals and contributing to TOWN, I’m excited to step in as managing editor. Drop me a line at leigh@communityjournals.com—I’d love to hear what you’d like to see in our pages.
