If you’re looking for a way to dive deep into Appalachian art culture, or you’re simply hankering for a short adventure, hop on North Carolina’s Avery County Quilt Trail. On this driving tour, you’ll discover numerous beautiful paintings of quilting squares that represent the history of the land, family stories, and everyday mountain life.

As you drive through the stunning mountain scenery, you’ll find 20 quilt squares scattered throughout, on barns, buildings, and hung on trees. While some are traditional, other squares display the more whimsical and quirky side of the Appalachian artform. These squares tell cultural stories and connect modern day mountain life to traditional Appalachian customs.

With support from The Blue Ridge National Heritage Area Partnership, the trail was revitalized earlier this year. It now provides a day’s worth of entertainment for those interested in Appalachian heritage, those looking for a relaxing adventure, or even for the entire family. Kids can hunt for quilts while you take in the natural beauty of Western North Carolina. The full trail map and list of quilts can be found here

After spotting all of the quilt squares, continue your getaway at Beech Mountain where you will discover a wide variety of restaurants, activities, and lodging establishments.
