Mountain biking gear you need and where to get it

Let me start with the bad news: When you first get into mountain biking, it might seem expensive, especially if you were expecting early-2000s beach cruiser prices.

But the initial cost is offset by two very important points: First, you’re not just buying a toy but a fully capable vehicle, and it’s a vehicle that in most places is free to use.

Second, a bike and most gear can be borrowed from someone, at least initially. If a friend is convincing you to start riding, they may have an extra bike and gear to share; and if not, many outfitters in the Upstate and Western North Carolina have rental programs.

“If you’re buying your first bike, buy something that’s going to allow you to grow into the bike as a rider,” said local mountain biker Matt Griffin. “Don’t be scared to invest in a proper bike and get a bike that fits your riding goals.”

Here’s what you’ll need to get out on the trails.

Mountain Biking Gear

  • Well-maintained mountain bike (with proper suspension depending on the terrain)
  • Helmet (to protect your noggin)
  • Bike gloves (to protect your hands)
  • Wicking clothes (to stay comfortable and dry)
  • An extra-warm outer layer
  • Bike-appropriate shoes
  • Snacks (for fuel)
  • Water bottle (if you have a bottle cage) or Camelback water backpack
  • A simple bike toolkit
  • A spare inner tube (in case your tire gets punctured)
  • A bike pump

Optional, terrain-dependent:

  • Elbow, knee, and shin pads
  • Eye protection
  • Night lights (for night riding–a joy in the winter, and in the hot months, too!)
