On January 15, 2022, we launched vive, a magazine dedicated to bringing unique and useful content to active adults in their 50s and beyond. We got the scoop on local TV news legends, tried our hand at fly fishing in the French Broad, checked in with some of the most hilarious performers in town, and met fascinating people in a variety of fields, from winery owners to philanthropists. In our first year shining the spotlight on this demographic, one truth became clear: the 50+ residents of the Upstate aren’t resting on their laurels—they’re just getting started.

Local Broadcast Legends: Where Are They Now?

Cumulatively, their careers span more than a century. Back in the day, we invited them into our homes each night while dining on frozen fish sticks and TV dinners. Long before the Internet and social media, the trio provided a lone, critical link to the rest of the world at 6 p.m. sharp. Otherwise, you had to wait for the morning paper.

Gone Fishing

Fly Fishing

Ty Mooney steps confidently into the East Fork of the French Broad River, water rushing over his green waders as he gets into position. He casts his line, the fly zipping out over the sun-dappled cove and landing in a shallow section with a satisfying splash. He floats the line out across the water, watching for movement, as the trees rustle in the breeze.

40 Years and Then Some

Sustaining any business for more than forty years is a huge deal. Sustaining a restaurant whose main dish is satirical comedy lampooning the very community it serves? Monumental. Yet that’s exactly what the Café and Then Some (CATS) has managed to do for forty-plus years, solidifying its position as one of Greenville’s most beloved theater venues.

Wine and Transformation

A scientist by trade—with a long career in the pharmaceutical industry—Allison Kennington is no stranger to fermentation. Fascinated by both the world of wine and the magic of transformation, it comes as no surprise that her second act in life would be opening a winery.

The Barbers: Enjoy the Ride

“If it’s fun, do it.” It’s a simple motto, but it has served Jerry and Tammy Barber well. Married 18 years, Jerry, 83, and Tammy, 62, have traveled the world, built companies, earned patents, won awards, raised children, helped raise millions for charity and, for good measure, have plummeted to the earth on a 485-foot tall amusement park ride in Australia – that he invented.
