Better to Best

Imagine yourself lounging in a deck chair by the pool at a beautiful island resort, your sunbathing reverie broken only by the sound of the wind sashaying through the palm branches. In the midst of life’s hectic busyness, this vacation has been your escape plan. So you indulge. Maybe you crack open a few extra bottles, treat yourself to the full-course menu, stay out a little longer at night. By the time you return home, you’re exhausted, a few pounds heavier, and even less prepared to face life’s challenges.

Sound familiar? Now imagine the same beautiful, breezy island, the same luxurious resort, the same pool. But instead of overindulging, you rest. You go on long walks, take a few invigorating cardio classes, and eat nutritious gourmet meals —all within the cocoon of an encouraging, inclusive community. You leave recharged, motivated, and equipped with strategies to live a healthier, fuller life.

This is the dream that awaits at Hilton Head Health, a nationally celebrated weight-loss and wellness resort tucked into Shipyard Plantation, just a quick stroll from Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island. What began as a weight-loss retreat forty years ago has blossomed into a holistic wellness mecca, now owned by successful entrepreneur and former program participant, Kevin Carter. Equipped with luxurious accommodations, upscale fitness facilities, a fine-dining restaurant, a rejuvenating spa, and an approachable, positive staff, it’s easy to see why H3 stays booked.

But it’s not the amenities that make the magic, which I quickly learn during my brief time at the resort. It’s the atmosphere, the community. The daily fitness classes, ranging from aqua resistance training to cardio boxing, aren’t competitive or driven by number-based results. The trainers, who also teach daily seminars on topics like mastering motivation or maximizing metabolism, are supportive, and the other participants, encouraging. Regardless of where someone is on their wellness journey, the vibe is the same—H3 truly wants to help people develop healthier, happier habits to create a healthier, happier life.

This mindset is clear from the initial consultation, where guests are guided to find the right experience for them. Programs range from four-day wellness retreats to four-week weight-loss options, or even a multiple-month stay for guests in need of a long-term recovery plan. Accommodations, daily meals, fitness classes, and lectures are included in the package, along with resort credits, which provide access to creative add-ons like cooking demos in the Healthy Kitchen, scalp and neck massages at the Indigo Spa (which I highly recommend), and even private counseling sessions and bike rentals for exploring the island.

During lunch at True Dining, where I thoroughly enjoy a succulent strawberry salad and fresh-caught grouper over orzo, a woman joins my table. She’s here for her third time, working remotely while focusing on her fitness goals. Another woman I meet on a lovely, vigorous walk through nearby Sea Pines Forest Preserve is using her coveted vacation days for a wellness refresh after a difficult season in life. At a sheet-pan-meal cooking demo, I chat with guests from across the country as we gain a wealth of nutritious know-how (and several simple, tasty recipes) from Chef Thomas.

It’s actually in a goal-setting class where I truly find the heartbeat of the H3 way, and why its programs are so successful. The instructor explains that it’s the “why” behind our goals that fuels our progress, echoing something former participant Sarah Polite told me when we chatted about her H3 experience.

“For me, it was . . . the mentality of taking time for myself, and [how] above all else, that needs to come first,” Sarah says. “I didn’t focus on the weight loss. I focused on non-scale victories, and what my true motivator was . . . . The toolkit was always very kind, and I had to grasp onto that kindness. The rest just follows.”

During my drive home, I reflect on my experience, thinking about my own “why.” Whether it’s having enough strength to play with your grandkids or rediscovering energy after years of stressful living, we all have reasons for wanting to live healthier lives. And it might just take a welcoming wellness vacation to make it happen.
