Amend Market makes sustainability simple.

As a 2018 Clemson graduate, Kendall Daly originally planned to go to law school to become an attorney. After majoring in environmental and natural resources and minoring in economic policy, she felt the best way to stem the massive problem of disposable plastic waste was to help enforce laws. “I guess I thought that was the only way to make effective changes,” she says.

Fast-forward to her new venture, Amend Market in the Village of West Greenville, where 27-year-old Daly has created one of the only sustainable refill shops in South Carolina. Customers can bring in their own clean and dry plastic and glass containers to refill, choosing from three categories: cleaning products, personal care products, and pantry products. Sold by the ounce and by weight, from a few ounces to gallons, customers can choose non-toxic laundry detergents, dish soaps and all-purpose cleaners, shampoos, conditioners, and body washes, as well as organic coffee beans, rice, oats, quinoa, and olive oil. Prices range from ten cents to twelve dollars an ounce online and in-store.

Daly is happy to provide samples of her products, which are sourced from 30 vendors, many of them local and woman- and minority-owned. “I know that people are more conscious of what they are consuming, and we want to be a direct line to help consumers shop with their values. People are now more concerned with what goes into and onto their bodies, and they care about the environment and where the trash goes. I wanted to create an option for those who support local purveyors in Greenville but end up at big box stores for household essentials.”

How to get started? Daly advises, “Start small with one or two items that you run out of and refill those. You can do small things that over time can have a big impact.”
