In 1926, the magician Harry Houdini was delighting audiences with his amazing feats, England was celebrating the birth of the future Queen Elizabeth, and here in Greenville, a group of 75 men and women were hard at work creating a local theater that would develop the arts, culture, and drama in the area for generations to come. They had no way of knowing just how successful that vision would be.
Now approaching its 100th birthday, the Greenville Theatre’s longevity is a testament to its enduring impact on local arts and culture, with more than 82,000 patrons excitedly attending its productions each year. It is not only a vibrant display of local talent, but it is a professional theatre company made by the Greenville community, for the Greenville community. Attracting visitors to the Upstate from across the region, the Greenville Theatre will no doubt remain a fixture for another century to come
