Sergio Hudson was born in tiny Ridgeway, South Carolina, about 25 miles north of Columbia, which has a population of fewer than 300 people. For someone from a small town, he always had outsized—some would say unrealistic—dreams. As young as four years old, he fantasized about being a successful fashion designer, dressing the biggest names.
A few decades later, it doesn’t get bigger than his luminary clients: Michelle Obama, Beyonce, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez. “Sergio is an example of what it means to ignite a passion and never let go of the dream,” said Jackie Adams, Columbia Museum of Art’s director of art and learning. “Focused on the Fit is not only a show about fashion, but also a story of how one makes their mark in the world.”
Hudson began building his brand by winning Styled to Rock, a fashion competition on Bravo TV, in 2013. He created his label in 2014, made his New York Fashion Week debut in 2020, and by 2021, was dressing his favorite fashion icons as well as business and political leaders.
“Many things are happening in my life that I could only dream of—this exhibition at the CMA is one of them,” Hudson says. “I feel very lucky, and I hope my story can inspire other young men in South Carolina to believe in themselves and follow their passion.”
The exhibit includes 38 illustrations along with 10 garments from the biggest moments in his career, including pieces worn to the Met Gala by Keke Palmer and Megan Rapinoe. Visitors get a look behind the scenes at the collaboration that goes into building a brand. Despite his high-profile work, his philosophy is that fashion should be designed to include everyone. His ready-to-wear clothes are available at Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and at sergiohudson.com.
