Immerse yourself in two distinct cultures through Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art’s newest exhibits
Located within the School of Arts at College of Charleston, Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art’s 3,200-square-foot exhibition space includes an array of unique artwork for public viewing. With a reference library, archive, and the Joanna Foundation Video Cavern, Halsey Institute serves as much more than a gallery.
Halsey Institute, named for accomplished artist and Charleston native William Halsey, draws contemporary artists from across the U.S., which allows the gallery to serve as a teaching and learning experience for College of Charleston art students. This unique opportunity allows for students to work with guest artists and curators from around the country, further enriching their art education.
Two upcoming exhibits highlight the unique cultures of two areas of the world using two very different mediums. Elisa Harkins’ Teach Me a Song is a collection of recordings of songs provided by collaborators. A Native American composer based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she focuses on “translation, language preservation, and Indigenous musicology” in her work.
Joining Harkins on display is Spandita Malik with the exhibit Meshes of Resistance. Malik—a New York-based artist from India—specializes in process work, specifically with photography. With an interest in global sociopolitical affairs, she spotlights women’s rights and gender-based violence. Malik’s exhibit focuses on women in India she met through her travels, and she engages them by having them collaborate on the final product of their photograph through an embroidery process.
The opening reception for both exhibits will be held Friday, April 5, and multiple events are scheduled throughout the exhibition run, including an artist talk, a curator coffee club, an embroidery workshop, and musical performances. Visit halsey.cofc.edu for more information.
