Downtown Greer: Hitting Its Stride

Dubbed Greer Station by locals, this charming downtown centers on pedestrian-friendly Trade Street, paved in multicolored brick and illuminated with strings of sparkling lights after dark. The city, established in 1873 along the Atlanta Charlotte Air Line Railroad, takes pride in its past, its central business district boasting more than 40 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places — now filled with restaurants, retailers and entertainment venues.

Stories from Greer’s past abound at Greer Heritage Museum (pro tip: take a ghost tour in the fall). The Greer Cultural Arts Council presents a variety of theater and music productions in the intimate concert hall inside the Edward R. Driggers City of Greer Center for the Arts and The Cannon Centre, which also hosts events and art exhibitions.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Greer City Park features a butterfly garden, a sprawling playground, a lake with an island gazebo and an amphitheater for al fresco concerts. On summer Sundays, the park hosts the Greer Farmers Market, and on Saturday mornings, Benchmark Bicycle Supply Co. sponsors a 25-mile ride that starts and ends at the shop. Afterward, stop for a pick-me-up at Flying Fox Coffee or Barista Alley.

Last summer, Greer broke ground on a 200,000-square-foot sports and event center, which will include basketball, volleyball and pickleball courts, community rooms, an e-sports facility, and batting cages. Completion is slated for 2027.
