Editor’s Letter: Nurturing Growth

The art adorning this month’s cover is a rose watercolored by Nicole Shannon. Petals, a stamen, a stem, and roots, among other parts, make up the flower, which is a tribute to her son. To flourish, the rose—like all plants and living beings—requires its pieces to function together, not to mention help from the external world: nutrients, oxygen, sunlight, and water. All beings need fundamental sustenance from their environments; others have systems or undergo experiences necessitating more.

Remarkably, a genetic mutation comprises Shannon’s rose, showing that even with the right environment, influences create conditions beyond individual control. Shannon’s son Quinn, who was born without 263 genes and needed around-the-clock care, inspired her rose series. Quinn, and the paintings, remind us of the beauty of those who are different and have special needs. Shannon also shows the beauty of those who are shining lights, creating nurturing environments to help others grow.

Everyone needs a guiding light, a warm embrace, to be taken care of from time to time. For a host of complex reasons, some have more extensive needs. This month’s issue shows this town’s heart—its drive to support those in need and the livelihood of workers, artists, students, and residents. The extraordinary feats of the Charitable Giving Award recipients and others show a commitment to providing access to housing, health, nourishment, and overall well-being.

Throughout this issue, one thing is clear: no one can build up themselves or others alone. It takes a community to nurture others and help them flourish. I hope this issue inspires you to become part of that community when you can—and to ask for help when needed. Humans, like roses, are inherently interdependent, and everyone, sometimes, needs a little care.
