Join us for a trip down memory lane. Can you guess the year these cultural milestones happened?

The new guy

Ken dolls are introduced as Barbie’s boyfriend. BFF Midge and sister Skipper wouldn’t come along for a few more years.  (1961)

Stop the presses

Ms. Magazine is founded by social/political activist Gloria Steinem and African-American feminist and child welfare advocate Dorothy Pitman Hughes.  (1972)

Shhhhhh!

A Boston DJ goes rogue and plays the single The Sound of Silence, which leads to a top 100-hit for Simon & Garfunkel. It paves the way for an album of the same name and mainstream success for the neighborhood pals from Queens.  (1965)

South entrance of Disney World in Orlando Florida

Coast-to-coast castles

Disney World opens in Orlando. Guests entered through one of 14 turnstiles while clutching booklets of paper tickets for A-E rides. (1971)

Original babysitter

Romper Room began its 41-year-long run, introducing us to Mr. Do-Be and a Magic Mirror. “Tell me today, did all my friends have fun at play?” (1953)

Cats the musical

Feline frenzy

“Cats” opened on Broadway, making Andrew Lloyd Webber a household name and black sweatshirts with glowing eyes “the” must-have travel souvenir of the decade. (1982)

Plastic Containers

Excuse me!

Massachusetts’ Earl Tupper invents Tupperware, with its patented “burping seal.”  Not long afterward, Tupperware Parties become the rage, bringing multi-level marketing to June Cleavers everywhere.  (1946)

Alaska Topographic Map Isolated

Did Juneau?

Alaska becomes the 49th state to join the Union, dwarfing California and Texas with its 663,268 square miles of land and water. (1959)

Fore!

Tom Watson chips from the rough of the 17th green at Pebble Beach — in what is considered to be one of the most clutch shots in golf history — to beat Jack Nicklaus for the U.S. Open title. (1982)

Stitches of love

The AIDS quilt is displayed for the first time on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., measuring 1,920 panels. Today, 50,000 panels make up the 54-ton quilt, which is under the stewardship of the National AIDS Memorial.  (1987)
