Two temporary Andy Warhol exhibitions on display in Greenville

Known for his colorful pop art and iconography, Andy Warhol is a renowned American maker who is much more than a can of soup. Beginning February 4th, you can experience Warhol’s ingenuity first-hand by visiting the Upcountry History Museum in Greenville. The museum’s two Warhol exhibitions include both iconic and understated screen prints, including those showing a more serious side of the novel artist. Whether you’re a long-time Warhol fan or new to his art, you won’t want to miss these extraordinary displays.

Works By Warhol features Warhol’s response to momentous US historical events. Created from 1969–1986 using screen prints made from materials like newspapers, photos, and advertisements, the collection coincides and engages with events including John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Neil Armstrong’s moon landing, the US Bicentennial, and more. The exhibition also includes “Myths,” a series highlighting Warhol’s fascination with Hollywood imagery.

Works by Warhol features 35 works and is on loan from The Cochran Collection in LaGrange, Georgia, through May 7, 2023.

Andy Warhol: Endangered Species includes oversized screen prints of 10 animals recognized as endangered by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, including the bald eagle, black rhinoceros, and bighorn ram. Warhol created 150 sets of the 10 prints and donated 100 sets to wildlife conservation organizations for fundraising purposes, transforming his fascination with mass production into a mass benefit.

A first for Upcountry History Museum, the exhibit will feature braille and tactile reproduction images, making the exhibit accessible to people with visual impairments. Further expanding accessibility, the artwork information panels will also be displayed in Spanish.

Andy Warhol: Endangered Species is organized by Art Bridges with works drawn from the collection of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. The exhibition is on display through April 30, 2023.

Upcountry History Museum, 540 Buncombe St., Greenville. Tues.–Sat., 10am–5pm; Sun., 1pm–5pm. Adults, $12; Senior adults and college students, $11, children 3–18, $9, children 2 and under, free. 864.467.3100, upcountryhistory.org
