Experts weigh in on what the most stylish walls are wearing this season.
To kick up kitchen decor, put the pow in a powder room, or impart a subtle effect where you slumber, nothing beats a wallpaper fix. We checked in with two top interior decorators in town to get their recommendations on what the latest walls are wearing.
According to Danielle Walter, owner of Diggs Design, wallpaper is “the best way to create impact and an easy way to draw the eye to places you otherwise would not expect. Lately, I have been using wallpaper on ceilings and as shelving backdrops for an unexpected pop. Dark hues will complement a sensational light fixture, especially in a powder room or foyer.”
Walter particularly likes textured wallpaper to add dimension, including grass cloth in colorful “neutrals” that don’t mean beige or tan. “I love cork as well, and we carry Thibaut wallpaper in our shop on Augusta Street—they have the most stunning selections,” she adds. “As for patterns, I love to go bold, and we particularly like all things global, such as African tribal-like patterns and Moroccan-inspired motifs. Selections reminiscent of different cultures will never not be on trend.”
Kelly Ford, owner of Ford Interior Design, feels that wallpaper “sets the scene for an entire house and helps create a specific vibe. It adds art, drama, interest, and fullness to a room. Whatever you choose, be intentional with the feeling you want to evoke—maybe it’s happy, cozy, warm, or positive. Maybe it’s a soft, romantic mood, one of spirited energy, or one that gives an overall elegance to the home. It’s all possible with just a few rolls of wallpaper.”
She is seeing lots of mushroom-colored shades, blush colors ranging from nude to moody rose, and whites running from creamy to warm beige. Neutrals stand the test of time—you may be able to get away with them in your home longer than other colors, she points out, and “we also love murals, candy stripes, delicate florals, and botanical prints.”
There’s an infinite array of wallpapers in colors, textures, patterns, scenes, stripes, animal prints, geometrics, and graphics. Rolls will typically range from $80 to $100 on the low end and can go from $350 to $700 on the high end. Both designers agree that the new, highly durable performance wallpapers are perfect for clients who have young children and wish to revamp their nursery or high-traffic areas.
