Living traditions abound on the Blue Ridge Craft Trails.
When chocolate and flowers are long forgotten, gifts curated from the Blue Ridge Craft Trails will continue to be held in hand and used often. Launched in 2022, the trails champion artists of high quality who open their workshops to the public. It’s a project of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. Twenty-five counties are represented as well as the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee.
Though there are more than 300 galleries, craft shops, and studios documented as part of the Blue Ridge Craft Trails, the following artisans stand out within striking distance of the Upstate. All three are less than 80 miles away, so plan a day trip with your sweetie, your daughter, or a car full of galentines.

While in Burnsville, make sure to stop into the stellar bookstore Plott Hound.

Old Fort, North Carolina
The Freemans have created bespoke pottery for 44 years. Their work is widely collected for its realistic portrayal of fauna and flora. Works start on the wheel and are finished by hand; liquified minerals are brushed on before each piece is fired in the kiln.
While in Old Fort, take a hike at Gateway Trails (mountain biking and equestrian options, too)
Many of the stops along the Blue Ridge Craft Trail are by appointment, but don’t let that deter a visit. These crafters are in their studios often and make time to spend with visitors, so simply reach out. The drive alone is its own reward; the region was designated a National Heritage Area two decades ago for its natural beauty and cultural significance.
